Insects, Fire Safety and Pumpkins!

I apologize that I haven't updated this blog as much as I'd hoped. With conferences and getting everything ready for maternity leave, it's been pretty busy around here! I have really enjoyed meeting with you all and talking about your special child! :)

2 weeks ago, we spent a lot of time talking about insects. We learned that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. The 3 body parts are the head, thorax and abdomen. We focused on ladybugs for our unit of study. We learned that ladybugs start out as an egg, emerge as larva, form a pupa and then come out as an adult ladybug! We ordered ladybugs so that the students could observe them in the classroom. The larva were on back order and came in this week. I'm so excited for the students to see the larva turn into adult ladybugs!

This is a ladybug larva. Quite different
than what you'd expect!

Last week, we learned about fire safety. We discussed all of the things that we should do in case of a fire. On Friday, we took a tour of the school looking for fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency exits and exit signs. On Friday, the Tega Cay fire department was supposed to come for a visit. Due to miscommunication, they did not come. We will hopefully visit them in the spring on our community helpers field trip. Last week in math, we learned about greater than, less than and equal. Check out some of the work the kids did in their math journals!

This week, we are learning about pumpkins. We will learn about it's life cycle and just how pumpkins grow! Today, we took a fun field trip to the greenway. Unfortunately due to heavy rain over the summer, they did not have any vines for us to see. Thanks to the internet and YouTube, we have found many pictures and videos to see! In math this week, we are learning all about the numbers 11-20.

Different ways of showing 11.
