3 things...

I will not be here tomorrow or Wednesday. I will be attending 2 all day trainings at Winthrop. I will have access to my email but may not be able to get in touch with the classroom via email. Should you need to make a transportation change or get in contact with the classroom, please call the office at 803-548-8250.

Congratulations to those students who received 20 green days!!
**When students reach 20 on their punch card, they receive a prize. Sometimes it may be a treat, other times it may be a prize from the prize box.

Also, today, we kicked off the Boosterthon Fun Run! This is an awesome fundraiser that we have for our school. It is one of the only fundraisers we have so we make a big deal out of it! In your child’s notebook, you will find their pledge book. Please take a moment to login tonight and enter your access code. We want to be the class with the most logins! If you have any questions, please email! The website is www.funrun.com. Check out pictures from our pep rally this afternoon!

Homework

***Please make sure that you are checking your child's notebook everyday. When important notes are sent home, they go in the notes sleeve of the notebook.***

As promised to the children, I have created homework for the next 2 weeks. I will usually send home a homework packet at the beginning of each month. The picture below shows the first page. Each day of the week, the children will do something different.

Here, you will see the rest of the packet. It's pretty self explanatory. On each page, you will see a day and a number at the top. For example, Monday 1, Tuesday 1, Wednesday 1 and Thursday 1 all refer to week 1 on the calendar.

Please read the directions to your child and let them complete the work on their own. You may find that some activities will require your guidance. For example, Wednesday's homework has them writing 3 things they use in school. Encourage your child to say the words slow and have them write down the letter sounds that they hear. This will encourage them and give them the confidence to sound out words when writing. It's totally ok if the word is not spelled correctly. At this stage in writing, they're not ready for the silent letters, exceptions to the rule, etc. As for the rest of the work, your child should be able to do most of this on their own without your help. As the year goes on, the homework may get easier or harder depending on their skill level. For September, I have given everyone the same homework as an introduction. These monthly homework packets are due at the end of the month. Just send it back in their notebooks.

Also in the notebooks this afternoon is color homework. An instruction sheet is attached. Feel free to do this whenever your family has time. It's something extra we planned to do this week, but we won't have the time. If you're able to complete, send it back Friday.

This week is color week!! We will be tye dying tshirts on Friday. Please send in a white 100% cotton tshirt by Wednesday. Let us know if you are unable to send one in. We have about 15 extra shirts here in the classroom. I am asking you to send in shirts because some parents wish to send in a large shirt or long sleeved shirt so it can be worn in the fall/winter. All we have are short sleeved shirts. We are also asking for a few volunteers. I plan to tye dye Friday morning. If you would like to volunteer, let me know. I will need you here around 9:30.

Japanese food anyone?

We are in need of  some chopsticks and those little attachments that make it easy for kids to use them. If you happen to eat out at a Japanese restaurant in the next week or so, would you mind asking for some? I am attaching a picture so you'll know what I am talking about.

Happy Birthday Trent

Today is Trent's 6th Birthday! We hope you had a great birthday Trent!

A few pictures and a cool website

Gosh, we have had so much fun in kindergarten so far! Today marked the 14th day. This week, I feel as if we are really getting into the 'groove' of kindergarten! Have fun looking at the pictures below! Also, check out this cool website we used today. Students can select a letter and it will use multiple letters to make an animal. Too cool!  http://www.bemboszoo.com/

These boys were so proud of the house
they built in free centers!

11 days down, 169 more days of learning!

The students are really starting to get into the groove of being in kindergarten! This week, we have been learning all about ourselves and our friends. In one center, we traced our names, cut them apart and graphed them by how many letters we had in our names. In the art center, we created faces that we will use to graph the boys and girls in our class. Next week, we will have one more week of All About Me. During our unit, we will continue to learn how to write and recognize letters and numbers. (Check out our common core math standards - http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics)

Great Weekend!

How was your 3 day weekend? The kids came in this morning with all kinds of stories. I will have to make some time this afternoon to let them all share!

My weekend was jam packed and I didn't even leave town. As you all may or may not know, the DNC has come to town. I have been following people on Twitter like a hawk. They have posted all sorts of celebrity sightings. My husband is none too happy about the DNC being in town. Me, on the other hand, I LOVE IT!! I drug him out of the house several times to see if we could spot someone famous. Unfortunately, we didn't really see that many people. We walked over to the epicentre where they were broadcasting MSNBC. We also saw Jeff Bridges and James Taylor perform at Trade & Tryon last night. After James Taylor played his 3rd song, the sky opened up and it poured! Matt and I did not bring an umbrella and therefore walked all the way home in the rain. I have to admit, it was kinda fun! :)

Here are some pictures of people that were uptown yesterday. Some I took and some are from Twitter.

James Taylor

Jeff Bridges (I figured this was a better shot than trying to zoom in to the stage!)

Hardball's Chris Matthews

Daily Show's John Oliver

Nancy Pelosi outside the Epicentre right before going on to talk with MSNBC

James Taylor again

Have a great 4 day week! :)
